I believe the reason why so many adults hit a barrier some time into learning an instrument much quicker than chidlren is that they have musicality to deal with immediately; this is unlike children who can place it away while they learn, only taking it up around advanced stages. A musician either develops a 'soul' to feel the music, which helps them progress, or don't devvelop it enough. Surely, exposure to the great compass of classical music will help to instill some of that soul. It's quite impressive to see a student being able to start Chopin without it sounding like a mess: there is a great feeling, though somewhat shallow (but that is of no consequence, since the rest develops with the understanding of how to use technique). Despite the technique still requiring quite some polishing(especially in learning polyrhythms, more graceful phrasing, etc), this is a great feat for one who has started for only a few moments. The staff notation acted as some help, but still needs to convert to standard notation some time in the future. All things aside, it is clear the student has great soul, and thus can tackle such Romantic-period pieces without making it a robotic mess as I have heard rendered by some. However, it is clear that some things are an acquired taste, such as Baroque pieces. The playing in the Goldberg Variations lacked the variety and expression encountered in later pieces: the soul could no longer be applied directly.
